We have seen how NPI opens up tournament consideration to a wider set of Division III men’s basketball teams than the previous regional ranking/committee selection system – but does NPI actually give every team a chance at an at-large tournament berth?
Observers of the previous system know that it seemed some teams with poor SOS numbers just couldn’t win enough to overcome it. With NPI we can run scenarios and get direct answers without having to guess how the human members of the RACs or National Committee might view a particular resume.
In this episode we take a look at two cases from last season of teams that ranked with the worst two strengths of schedule according to NPI to see if there is a point at which they enter the at-large picture if enough losses were turned to wins. The results might be surprising, and do they have implications for how a team should put together their schedule? Join us as our NPI summer series continues!
